Healthcare facility design innovations take center stage as the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announces its 2024 Healthcare Design Awards winners. Among the honorees are two standout AEI projects showcasing the transformative impact of thoughtful design in healthcare:
- Rush University Medical Center’s Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building: Winner in the Ambulatory – Cancer Center category.
- University Health System Women’s & Children’s Hospital Expansion and Renovation: Winner in the Women’s Hospitals category.

Rush University Medical Center’s Joan and Paul Rubschlager Building | Ambulatory – Cancer Center Winner
This 480,000-square-foot outpatient care facility across from Rush’s Tower Hospital will offer specialized cancer and neurological care, featuring diagnostic imaging, radiation therapy, and clinical trial options. AEI is providing mechanical, electrical, piping/plumbing (MEP), instrumentation and controls, information technology, and sustainable engineering services, including energy-saving innovations in the building’s façade design that optimize light transmittance and solar heat gain, helping achieve an anticipated 20% energy savings.
University Health System Women’s & Children’s Hospital Expansion and Renovation | Women’s Hospitals Winner
The 827,000-square-foot expansion encompasses inpatient units, diagnostic services, a heart vascular and advanced endoscopy suite, and public, administrative, and support spaces. AEI provided MEP, information technology, and sustainable design solutions, incorporating flexible air handling systems for maintenance and infection control and open-source controls for future advanced systems integration.
