AEI’s True IPD Cone Health Ambulatory Clinic and Cancer Treatment Center Project Wins the 2025 LCI Lean in Design Award
We are proud to announce that Cone Health System’s Ambulatory Clinic and Cancer Treatment Center in Asheboro received the 2025 Lean Construction Institute (LCI) Lean in Design Award, recognizing exceptional achievements in Lean design practices.
The LCI Design Award recognizes project teams that set new benchmarks in design excellence and collaborative Lean Project Delivery, showcasing how Lean strategies drive improved performance and industry innovation.
While the award focuses on design elements, it also celebrates the collective effort behind it. Engineers, architects, clients, and construction partners are all recognized for their shared commitment to a more integrated, effective design and construction process. AEI’s contributions reflect our dedication to design leadership and to applying Lean principles in meaningful, practical ways.

Set amid preserved forest, the project prioritizes patient experience and community connection. Integrated Project Delivery and Lean design methods enabled a healthcare campus that balances patient needs, environmental conservation, and project goals.

Motivated by speed and flexibility, the team delivered 51,000 square feet of oncology, ambulatory care, imaging services, and a compounding pharmacy with minimal site impact – all designed and constructed within 24 months. AEI provided mechanical, electrical, piping/plumbing, and fire protection engineering design.
Faced with tight budgets, timelines, and late program changes, the team used collaboration and Lean decision-making to stay on track. Early procurement and the use of Choosing by Advantages enabled informed choices and steady progress. The result is a state-of-the-art, highly functional, health and wellness facility.
