Carle Foundation Hospital
Carle at the Riverfront
A centralized campus addressing local needs and nurturing community well-being.
Carle Health is a vertically integrated organization and a premier healthcare provider with over 16,800 team members across eight hospitals, multi-specialty physician groups, numerous health plans, and various associated healthcare businesses.
Its flagship, Carle Foundation Hospital, employs over 11,000 individuals and maintains 453 beds alongside a multi-specialty physician group with over 1,000 doctors and advanced practice providers. It serves as a Level I Trauma Center, providing advanced Level III perinatal services, and is certified as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level III Epilepsy Center. The Carle Foundation Hospital is a cornerstone of Carle Health, earning accolades from America's 50 Best Hospitals by Healthgrades® and maintaining its Magnet® designation for nursing excellence.
Due to the growing community, expanding service needs, and space constraints, Carle Health invested in its local community by building a new medical campus in downtown Danville, IL, Carle at The Riverfront. A symbol of Carle Health’s dedication to Danville and its surrounding areas, this revitalized medical campus consolidates more than 250 team members from the former Carle Danville on Fairchild and Carle Danville on Vermillion campuses into an accessible, centralized hub that provides comprehensive and enhanced healthcare services.

Spanning 17 acres, the new medical campus features an ambulatory surgery center, an emergency medical services (EMS) facility, and the co-developed Christie Clinic at the Riverfront, a collaboration between Carle Health and Christie Clinic. As one of the largest buildings in Vermillion County, the 155,000-square-foot ambulatory surgery center includes two operating suites, procedure rooms, nuclear medicine, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, convenient care, imaging, infusion therapy, outpatient labs, primary and specialty care clinics, physical rehabilitation, sleep labs, conference rooms, a retail pharmacy, a lobby, support areas, and ample parking facilities.
Not yet constructed, the 8,000-square-foot, single-story EMS facility encompasses four ambulance bays, dedicated staff support, and dispatch space. Adjacent to the EMS facility is the expansive 17,000-square-foot, two-story Christie Clinic at the Riverfront. This medical office building doubles the size of Christe Clinic’s existing North Vermillion Street location, unifying its current services, including primary care, cardiology, convenient care, dermatology, dietitian, foot and ankle, surgery, laboratory, nephrology, orthopedics and sports medicine, pain and rehabilitation, physical therapy, radiology, vein and vascular, as well as new specialties.
“Carle has been part of this community for almost 40 years, and this medical campus will allow us to provide a modern, comprehensive facility supporting the needs of our patients in the area. The medical office building and ambulatory surgery center facilities will host more than 30 services, extending access to advanced care and specialty services not currently available in the community.”

AEI provided a full spectrum of services—including mechanical, electrical, piping/plumbing, fire protection, information technology, instrumentation and controls, and sustainable design—across all three facilities. To support Carle Health’s sustainability goals, AEI designed the healthcare facility to achieve LEED Version 4 certification.
AEI’s comprehensive design encompassed the following systems:
- A heating hot water boiler plant
- Full-building HEPA filtration as a pandemic response
- A full-building emergency generator providing backup power across all three buildings
- A telecommunications hub equipped with the latest technologies
- A complete suite of medical gases from a bulk-bottle storage location
Carle Health introduced a novel self-check-in and rooming system for all patients visiting its new developments. Guided by pioneering project objectives, the medical campus design prioritizes wayfinding, ample natural light, and scenic views of a nearby park and cityscape, fostering a contemporary and inviting environment tailored to diverse patient needs. Additionally, Carle Health extended its commitment to sensory-friendly spaces at Carle at the Riverfront, supporting individuals with neurodivergent challenges.
Beyond improving and expanding the region’s healthcare, Carle at the Riverfront has become a central hub for community needs. Supplying retail and commercial development to the area, the campus boasts a dynamic plaza and flexible event space catering to farmers’ markets and health-related functions. It also prioritizes public transit accessibility, ensuring the public can conveniently access essential medical services and communal amenities.
Among its latest additions, Carle at the Riverfront comprises a community garden that grants hands-on educational experiences for students across all academic levels in a natural setting. The garden promotes sustainable, farm-to-table living principles and highlights the benefits of growing one’s food, contributing to improved social and economic factors that impact community health.
