An AEI Project, Aggie Square, Pioneers Sustainable Innovation in Commercial Development
Aggie Square is a groundbreaking commercial development led by Wexford Science & Technology, LLC, in partnership with the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). Designed to push the boundaries of sustainability in the built environment, Aggie Square is setting a new standard for high-performance, energy-efficient design.
In a recent UC Davis blog, AEI Principal and Building Performance Practice Leader Paul Erickson, based in Affiliated Engineers, Inc. Madison, WI, discusses the project’s forward-thinking design and ambitious sustainability goals alongside project partner ZGF Architects.

As Engineer of Record, AEI is delivering a full suite of engineering services, including mechanical, electrical, piping/plumbing (MEP), fire protection, technology, security, and sustainable engineering design, along with architectural lighting design solutions from our in-house Pivotal Lighting Design team.
Aggie Square's all-electric MEP infrastructure is a benchmark for sustainable development, integrating cutting-edge engineering solutions to:
- Optimize energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, supporting a transition to 100% clean electricity.
- Enhance resiliency with advanced HVAC systems, heat recovery chillers, and an integrated exhaust system for energy recovery.
- Reduce water consumption, targeting a 36% reduction in water use.
Aligned with UC Davis's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2025, Aggie Square targets LEED Gold certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility and high-performance building design.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a unicorn of a building, but it is really the leading edge of what we're seeing nationally for complex buildings at this scale.”
